Monday 1 – Friday 5 August 2016

The COW team are looking forward to running our sixth year of Children on Water week – COW.

This is a family event supported by the Club for all to enjoy. We hope the weather will be kind to us whilst we sail around the Harbour having picnics, ice creams, the odd sweet and BBQ sausages on the beach. There will be an end of week COW party with Wipe Out Machine, so sign up at the bar at the beginning of the COW week for all that is available off the water. Ollie and his team will be providing packed lunches and children's teas throughout the week. Sign up direct with Ollie at the bar for all these.

We can possibly place children who are less confident in boats helmed by more experienced sailors – so please do not be deterred if you child is a complete novice – we may just be able to get them out on the water if possible.

This event is run free of charge. However for this to happen we need an army of volunteers on and off the water throughout the week in three main areas:

  • If you hold a PB2 qualification please sign up on Dutyman to drive or crew a safety boat. You can access Dutyman through the sign up sheet below or here. We still have spaces that need filling.
  • Shore support is essential to the smooth running of the week, so please fill in which days you will be available to help and sign up for duties at the beginning of the week again using the sign up sheet link below (N.B. link to follow).
  • Don't forget we need lots of cakes every day too !!! Sign up using sign up sheet link below (to follow).

For any more information contact Barbara Langford or Gillian Carter via the secretaries.

In the event of adverse weather we will endeavour to reorganise activities to shore. This may be in the pool or in the North Room watching a movie.

Please be aware that we are not responsible for your children during the whole event on and off the water and you must accept that whilst we offer safety boat assistance your children are not on a training course and so must be able to be confident out on the water alone. Please feel free to accompany your children whilst they are on the water.

Sign up for this fun-filled event!

Look forward to seeing you there.

Children On Water (COW) Week 2017

Monday 7th August to Friday 11th August

COW Week is an opportunity for all our Juniors to get to know each other on and off the water. They will have fun whilst learning the essential skills needed to sail safely and confidently. During COW week we explore the harbour, have picnics on Fowley Island, play rigging and knotting races, sail in all types of boats and take part in the Townsend Cup Seamanship Race. Off the water, we will have games in the pool, quizzes, bbqs, movies and a party on the Friday evening.

The children can sail their own boats if they have the confidence to sail around the harbour, or there will be opportunities for them to join AI’s, DI’s or parents in larger boats with other children.

It's a family event in which the whole family can take part and contribute in many ways from baking cakes for children's teas to manning safety boats, sailing with less confident children, and helping ashore or with the planning of the event.

If you can support the event in any way please contact the Junior Co-ordinator at juniorcoord@emsworthsc.org.uk.

To take part, you must register your children in advance, registration will be open later in the year.

Here is the rough itinerary which is subject to change.

The Martlets training season begins on Tuesday 5 April 2016. Following last year’s successful introduction of the Assistant Instructor (AI) training programme, we would like to invite Junior Club members in school years 9-11, with RYA Level 1–3 dinghy sailing certificates, to submit an application to assist in this year’s Martlets training programme.

This role should be of particular interest to those considering doing their RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification in the future.

Please see the RYA website for details of the Assistant Instructor course

To qualify as an AI, Juniors must achieve the following:
1) Complete a minimum of 20 hours assisting SIs;
2) Pass one of the RYA’s Sailing Schemes Advanced Modules (eg: Start Racing, Seamanship Skills, Day sailing with Spinnakers or High Performance Sailing);
3) The recommendation of the Club’s Principal – Matthew Wright.

AIs will always work under the direct supervision of a Senior Instructor (SI). The training and assessment of this course will be conducted by the SIs. You will be assessed on your teaching ability, and, if successful, you will have your logbook signed and will be awarded the AI qualification. A minimum of 20 hours of assisting SIs is required to complete this course. It is hoped that participation in this course will assist in the transition for those who wish to undertake the RYA Dinghy Instructor course.

As this is a voluntary opportunity, it may also interest those Juniors taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme. If this aspect of the AI programme is of interest to you, it would be advisable to discuss this with your DofE coordinator to confirm that this will fulfil the requirements of the DofE scheme. Please could you also indicate on your application form that you are participating on the AI programme as part of your DofE award. This will assist in the organisation of instructors and help to ensure that adequate hours are allocated to you.

If you are interested in taking part in this programme, please complete the two forms below and return to ESC by no later than Saturday 5 March 2016. (Please mark all correspondence for the attention of Steph Barker and Alex Healey – AI Coordinators, Martlets Team.)
