We are at that time of year when we begin the search for our new Junior Captains.

But before we can do that, we would like to extend our thanks for everything Georgie Cosens and Charlie South have done as Junior Captains this year. It hasn't been an easy year to take on any role at the Club, and Charlie and Georgie have done a great job in making sure our Junior members are represented on committees and by leading by example on the water.

The Club is now looking for its next Junior Captain(s). It is a very important role to ensure that the Club meets the needs of all junior sailors. This role gives the Captain(s) an opportunity to see how the Club works and to develop their communication and team-leading skills.

Please read the job description below to work out if it's something that you'd be interested in doing. If you think you are perfect for the job, please email your application letter to secretary@emsworthsc.org.uk by 22 October explaining why you think you are the right person for the job and what you'd like to achieve for the club whilst you are Junior Captain.

Job Description - ESC Junior Captain

The Junior Captain(s) should be keen sailor(s) with a passion for encouraging the Club's junior section (school years 2 13) to participate in relevant Club events.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Acting as a role model for the Juniors at the Club, actively participating in sailing events at the Club and representing the Club at competitive events.
  • Attending Junior Events and training helping Junior members as appropriate and networking within the Club to meet and engage with sailors, instructors and parents (eg you may attend rigging sessions where parents and juniors learn how to rig their boat or attend open meetings at the club and encourage young members and provide hints and tips).
  • Attending Junior Working Group meetings as the voice of the Junior section. Represent the views of the Juniors at Junior Working Group and House and Sailing committee meetings ensuring the plans for the section are what is wanted across all Junior age groups (from Martlets to older teens).
  • Developing one new event or solution to an issue (on or off the water) that will enhance the Junior section. For example this could be a fundraising activity, a new sailing event or a social event. Implementing the idea will be aided by the Junior Working Group, or by the House and/or Sailing committee.
  • Providing monthly reports to Sailing and House committees with views and suggestions from the Junior Section.
  • Managing the Club Junior Instagram account and actively communicate and engage with the junior sailors and their families through this channel. The Junior captains will be supported in developing a content management plan, highlighting the objectives for the Instagram account.
  • Encouraging sailors to be more active Club members. This might include organising Junior sailors to volunteer for club activities, such as working groups, duties (as appropriate), environmental issues or fundraising.
  • Attending (where possible) key Club events such as the New Members' reception, the start of season meeting, COW and Junior Race Week, Junior open meetings.
  • Having a role in key Club social activities, including the Junior Christmas party, curry and quiz nights etc.
  • The Junior Captain(s) should have good communication skills, good organisational skills, be happy to work as part of a team and be happy to stand up and present to small groups.
