We urgently need your help - On the water duty
Published 17:39 on 27 Jul 2020
Dear all,
Given that the RYA has recently issued guidance that members from different households may sail together provided additional precautionary steps are taken, ESC is now relaxing its "families only" principle.
Safety boats
We believe that in our larger RIBs social distancing is possible as cox and crew, because they do not sit face-to-face and also maintain a minimum 1 metre distance in an outdoor environment. If you have a regular cox or crew that you would usually volunteer for duties with but they are outside of your household, that you are comfortable with, please would you consider volunteering for a duty on one of the larger RIBs (Escimo, Francesca, Escalibur) following the guidance set out above.
In addition, the RYA has stated that single-handed crewing of some safety boats is possible; they have published a 15min video on their website. In our case, ESC would like to ask our 25 advanced Coxes (ESC designated Cox+) who perform the role for down harbour races, to consider volunteering. There are no down-harbour races this season. Single crewing only on one of our Commandos (Escargo, Fresco, Escape)
Race Officers/Assistant Race Officers
The same applies for Race Officer/Assistant Race Officers pairing. With only one person in the bridge/computer area at a time guideline, and any proximity time minimal, it should be possible to maintain 2-metre distancing at almost all times, and certainly, the 1 metre + (the "+" mitigation being that we are outside in the fresh air). in cases where you undertake a role as RO/ARO with someone from outside of your household, provision for social distancing on the bridge has been made. Please follow sensible measures to avoid sharing equipment and working closely together for more than a few seconds at a time
The duties below do not include the junior programme (Youth Race Week, Junior Race Weekend, Time on the Tide and Martlets events) which are still in the planning stage. The junior team will be looking for additional volunteers as each event is organised.
There are currently 69 roles yet to be volunteered for.
- 27 x Coxes
- 23 x Crew
- 10 x Race Officers
- 9 x Assistant Race Officers
Please do kindly volunteer to enable the season to be a success - in spite of the current strange and restricting time that we are all living through at present. Duty roster link (click on link)
Many thanks in advance for your help to make the season a good one for all!
Best wishes
