RYA Dinghy Instructor under Covid Rule
Minimum age | 16 |
Required certificates | First aid certificate RYA Powerboat Level 2 RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work |
Experience | Experienced sailor in strong winds |
Pre-entry assessment | To be completed within one year prior to the instructor course. Candidates should be able to complete tasks such as those listed below, sailing at all times with an awareness of the 'five essentials', and confirming they can sail in a controlled and confident manner, showing consideration for preparation, communication, approach and execution, at all times. During the assessment the candidate will be asked to complete the following: - Sail around a triangular course of 100m (minimum) legs to the best of their ability using all the boat's normal equipment,
- Sail a tight circular course around a stationary boat, making only one tack and one gybe.
- Sail a 'follow my leader' course behind another boat. The course may include all points of sailing and may be behind another sailing dinghy or behind a powered boat.
- Pick up a man overboard dummy; the boat to be stopped and more than one attempt should not be needed.

Training course | In these Covid time the normal 50 hour/5 day week has been reduced to 3o hours 3 days Training in teaching techniques afloat and ashore is provided during the course. Run by an RYA Coach/Assessor and moderated on the final day by another RYA Coach/Assessor who has not been involved in the candidate's training. Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in course preparation, delivery and management, as well as customer liaison. |
Qualified to teach | Single handers in National Sailing Scheme Levels 1, 2 and 3, Day Sailing, Seamanship Skills and Sailing with Spinnakers Single handers in Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1, 2, and 3. Instructors are not assessed as competent in running a training centre, and should always work under the supervision of an RYA Senior instructor. |
Validity | The Covid variation of the standard DI award is valid for 2 years but the intention is to convert to the full DI ticket which covers double handers by attending a further 2 days training when condition allow , The full DI ticket is valid for five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. |
