Simon Curwen has an incredible record of ocean racing. Having been inspired by Francis Chichester and Robin Knox-Johnson as a young sailor, he always aspired to undertake his own solo challenge.

Simon competed in the Mini Transat and remains the highest placed finisher in this event, which has been running since 1977. There followed double-handed RORC races and single-handed racing in his J105 including 5 Fastnets, with a Fastnet class win in 2007.

The recreation of the Golden Globe Race on its 50^th anniversary presented the opportunity for that solo circumnavigation dream. In 2022-23 Simon completed his GGR circumnavigation, leading from the start until storm damaged near Cape Horn. After a pit stop and a 2000 mile detour Simon recovered the race lead in the North Atlantic winning the GGR Chichester Class.

Simon's presentation will revolve around the preparation for and participation in a Golden Globe Race, including the concept and the race rules sailing as it was in 1968; preparation of the boat and qualification for the race and a summary of his own Golden Globe Race 2022-23.

The talk will be followed by a supper of cottage pie with winter vegetables, then a pudding of white chocolate & raspberry meringue roulade, with a coulis and sorbet.
