Trafalgar Night
Over 250 years ago on the 21st of October 1805 the Royal Navy fought against the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies. The encounter took place in the South West of Spain near Cape Trafalgar. In a particularly fierce battle, 27 British ships of the line fought 33 French and Spanish of the line and won a decisive victory. The cost of achieving this victory was that the British Fleet had 458 sailors and Royal Marines killed and a total of 1208 wounded. As we have done over many years, the Emsworth Sailing Club has continued the tradition of celebrating Lord Nelsons Victory and 2025 is no exception.
The Battle of Trafalgar is one of those rare events in history about which everyone knows something because it assumed almost mythical status! However, as regular attendees to the dinner will testify, one of the highlights of the evening is the after-dinner speech which always brings new, interesting and often witty insights.
