ESC is excited to announce that the Optimist fleet is welcomed to be part of the 21/22 Winter Training Squads. The aim is to build upon the skills learnt through this year, avoid the skill fade often associated with the winter period and expand Oppie sailor's knowledge, experience and enjoyment of racing.

The Optimist Squad is aimed at those juniors that are keen to learn to race, ideally with RYA stage 3, and some experience of racing at a club. All sailors must be capable of sailing on the harbour (not just the Millpond), be self-sufficient on the water including being confident after a capsize and be equipped to cope with the weather conditions. (Please note these criteria are designed to be easier to fulfill than for the other Winter Training Squads for the older sailors.)

Each weekend will be training on the Saturday followed by coached racing on the Sunday, roughly 3 hour per training day, based on a 30 minute brief, 2 hours on the water and a 30 minute debrief. This is shorter than for the other classes doing winter training. If conditions are deemed to be rather brutal, these sessions may be cancelled or be held on the Millpond.

A minimum of 5 sailors will be required for this winter programme to run.
