The Club runs a successful Junior Training programme known as 'Martlets'. Training uses the RYA Syllabus with Club-appointed RYA qualified instructors. Martlets are children in year 2 and above at the Easter break.
Coots are children under Martlet age. It is a social group run by parent volunteers to encourage friendships in our youngest members before they start Martlets.
Time on the tide
Scheduled for one session each month with more during May half term and in August, these sessions are aimed at getting Juniors some time on the water to practice their skills, together with safety cover. There will be no tuition and Parent Volunteers will be expected to help provide safety cover and shore support. Click here for 2020 dates.
The aim of Children on Water week is to bring junior sailors of all ages together to consolidate their sailing skills and boost confidence whilst going on picnics andexploring theharbour. Older juniors help encourage the younger sailors using the skills they have gained at the Club. It is a week which we hope will be enjoyed by all members and an opportunity to enhance our juniors' sailing experience and strengthen friendships. Click here for 2020 dates.
Parents are expected to provide shore and safety boat cover (PB2 qualification required) during the week.
All juniors are welcome to join Club races subject to individual race rules. There are different series of racing to suit all abilities from Improver Martlets and above, introducing juniors to racing in the harbour around fixed marks and laid inflatable marks. There will be experienced support for these events, but parents are expected to volunteer for shore and safety support.
The Junior Challenger series will be held once a month on dates through the season. This series is aimed at juniors wanting to get more experience racing. The series will feature several short "back to back" races. Racing will start from a committee boat, and race around inflatable, laid marks. There will be fleet starts, though the Race Officer may vary this, depending on numbers. The aim is to improve racing and handling skills over short courses. Click here for 2020 dates.
The Club has a Junior Regatta, run in alternate years by ESC and ESSC, as well as Junior Race weekend. In years featuring better tides, then the Junior Race weekend would revert to a Junior Race week. Click here for 2020 dates.
Parents or guardians of junior members intending to race are required to read the General Sailing Instructions (GSIs) and sign a Junior Declaration. Their attention is drawn to the sections of the GSIs concerning safety. Click here for more information - junior declaration.
