Folly Trophy - 11 & 12 May 2024
The Folly race is a 2-day Inter-club race versus ESSC.
This year ESSC are organising this race, the Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Entry Form can be found at the bottom of this page
The critical date which new cruiser members should be aware of is the last date for applying for a handicap is Saturday 27 April (two weeks before the event) and likewise anyone who needs to apply for a change in handicap.
Also, anyone wishing to declare WSO must do so by Saturday 27 April.
The race will be to Lymington on the 11 & 12 May..
The trophy had been won for many years by Slipper, but we were delighted to bring it to ESC 2022 but sadly lost it back to ESSC in 2023 and hope we could win it back this year.
Last year we trialled a new approach from the traditional 2nd day round the Island race. To encourage greater participation for the Folly event, particularly from lighter boats with less offshore capability or crews with less experience, we made a few changes to the race schedule and the scoring system.
However due to last years "interesting" weather we abandoned the Round the Island option for day 2 and most boats raced back up the Solent.
- We intend to continue with the changed format for this year, weather permitting.
- .
- The changes we made are as follows:-
- 1.This event will be run as two separate races with points being awarded for each race. This will replace the previous system whereby the elapsed times were used to calculate the final results.
- The benefit of this change is that if a boat has to retire or gets disqualified in one of the races, it is still able to compete in the other race. No one wants to see a boat (from either club) excluded from the whole event If it has to retire in one of the races.
- 2.For the Day-two race, two races will be run and competitors will be given a free choice which one they wish to enter. The first will be the Off-Shore Route or the In-Shore Route.
