Blake Fund news

The Blake Fund for Young Sailors provides financial and other support for our young sailors. This fund was established by the Club in 2001 following the tragic death of Peter Blake, the celebrated New Zealand yachtsman whose home had been in Emsworth for more than 30 years. His wife Pippa is actively involved with the Fund and helps make decisions for our Juniors.

The monthly draw will be held this Friday during Happy Hour. If you want to take part in the lottery draw that raises money for the Fund please contact Blake Fund trustees at lottery@emsworthsc.org.uk.

This year, so far, the fund has given awards to the following applicants (see below) and is in the process of making awards to other young sailors.

  • Unity Bowns was awarded a Sea Staff recommendation by the Ocean Youth Trust last year. The Blake Fund is helping her return as a third mate to be trained up through the RYA Yachting Scheme to Yachtmaster.
  • We have 8 ESC Juniors attending the RS Games / RS Tera Worlds at the WPNSA in Weymouth in August. The Blake fund is helping to provide training sessions for our young sailors and a Senior Instructor on the first day.
  • Eliza South is attending an expedition to Dominica organised by Operation Wallacea in the summer of 2023. The expedition task will be to undertake research into the effects of climate change on the local environment, research in the effects of ocean acidification on the local reef on the ecosystems. The Blake Fund is helping to fund this ecological work..
  • The Blake fund has also provided funding for 2 sessions of introduction to sailing for the local Southbourne Sea Scouts group.
