How Mrs Townsend saved the swimming pool in 1964

At the Club in the 1960's the swimming pool was an enclosed area in front of the terrace which was filed and emptied daily by the tide. But it was in a very poor state and leaking badly, and many members thought it should be done away with completely.

The majority of the Committee thought so too, but the whole matter needed to be discussed for a decision to be made by the members as to whether we still wanted a swimming pool at the Club.

So, at the AGM of 1964, held at old Baptist Church, about a hundred members listened to the Committee's proposals and many members voiced their opinions. The mood seemed to be swinging in favour of no pool at the club, when Mrs Townsend (grandmother and great grandmother of the many Townsend family members) stood up and spoke for about ten minutes, telling the members what an asset the pool had been over the years to many families and ended by quoting that in the original constitution of the Club it included "the provision of bathing facilities". We then voted, which resulted in 44 for a new pool to be built and 30 who did not want it.

So, to all members who use the pool, remember Mrs Townsend, who saved it for us all!

And to the members who keep it warm and clean for us every day, a big thank you!
