Emsworth pole huggers dish out an education at BUCS
Luke South writes: Bristol University is not only a centre of educational excellence, but also the Uni of choice for ESC youth!
On the Saturday 14 March, Tommy Millard, Ben Millard, Eliza South and Josh Jones represented Bristol (& Emsworth) at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Windsurfing National Championships at Cheddar Reservoir.
8 visiting universities amassed at Cheddar for a variety of races on slalom courses with the fleet split to expert and intermediates. In a relatively light breeze, the starts were mayhem with rigs and boards going off in all directions. The lectures on the Racing Rules and Starting procedures seemed to be a lesson skipped by many! But not our Emsworth posse who educated the fleet on starts, mark rounding and the rules of free pumping!
Over four short races Eliza, who had only windsurfed once this year, pulled out an impressive series of results to take the National Championships (Intermediate), Tommy secured an impressive 2nd in the Expert fleet and when combined with his "Freestyle" scores took the series win over all, Freestyle Champion and in conjunction with Ben and Josh, Team Relay champions too.
As an Emsworth/Bristol team, their prizes were two new sails for the Uni and knowledge that Emsworth produces the Best Uni Pole Huggers!
