Mini-Yoke Challenge

Monday evening saw ESC retain the DF95 Mini Yoke Challenge sailed with DF95 model racing yachts in what turned into a heated exchange with all the usual banter on the shore between ESC and ESSC sailors and supporters.

Each team consisted of 7 sailors, however we went well prepared with backup/pit crew, an off-water team captain and a spare boat! The format followed last year's with each race counting the best 5 positions for each team. After 10 races, the race wins ended up even with 5-a-piece. However, ESC's team racing skills and focus on getting more high- or mid-fleet positions, even if it meant sacrificing a place for a team member, shone through as a winning strategy. There were many notable performances, including the pit crew due to the many gear failures we incurred. However, ultimately this was truly a team effort and resulted in yet another glorious 12 months of bragging rights on the pond!

ESSC hosted the event and opened their bar, providing excellent chips and access to cheap beer prior to the handing over of the ...errrr child's plastic till to our team captain! Such was the confidence that Jonny and Jerry had, we elected to leave the Yoke trophy safely locked up in the ESC cabinet as a strategic mind game - nothing to do with senile forgetfulness at all!

Many thanks to all team members, on and off water, the ESC supporters who came and cheered us on, Slipper for their generous hospitality, the relentless team that has pushed to get the pond to actually hold water, Martin Wilson (RO) and his support team for some fine race craft and then finally those wonderful boats and the many well-made replacement electronics!

ESC on the Water: Alan Perry, Bill Tucker, Dave Acres, Jerry White, Jonny Hepworth, Nick Yoward and Simon Payne
ESC Off the Water: Team captain Margarita Payne and reserve/pit crew Giles Bowman and Russell Payne.

Remember it's the fastest growing form of sailing without getting wet - come and have a go!
